Where bush meets the beach! Saadani is the only wildlife sanctuary in EastAfrica with an Indian Ocean beachfront. Though Saadani has been a game reserve since 1969, it only recently got national park status and this has helped transform the once forgotten reserve to a very attractive tourist destination offering significant variety of wildlife.

Saadani with its 20km coastline supports inland habitat of open grassland interspersed with stands of acacia trees and knotted coastal thicket. Along the coast, palm-lined beaches are separated by extensive mangrove stands, while the major watercourses are fringed by lush riparian woodland.

Concentration of Game

There is quite a significant variety of wildlife in Saadani which can be seen throughout the year. Large predators include Lions, Leopards and Spotted Hyena. Nocturnal predators include Civet, Serval, Genet and African Wild Cat. Other prominent species include: Elephant, Hippo, Waterbuck, Reedbuck, Hartebeest, Wildebeest, Bushbuck, Crocodile, Yellow Baboon, Vervet Monkeys, Eland, Giraffe, Zebra, Warthog, Red Duiker and Greater Kudu. The ocean and rivers offer a good selection of marine and riverine birds. And the beaches around Saadani form one of the last major breeding sites for green Turtles on mainland Tanzania.

Best time to visit

Saadani is open to tourists throughout the year. However the best months for visiting in terms of large wildlife concentration are the months of January and February and the months between June and August. This is when the plains hold more water.

Besides game drives in the park, there are guided bush walks and boat trips up the Wami river bringing one closer to nature.

Saadani is nowadays very easily accessible from Dar es Salaam by good surface road. There is a small airstrip at the park where light aircrafts can land. Very soon scheduled flights linking the park with Arusha and Zanzibar are going to be introduced.

Duration Required

2 full days in the park would be quite ideal in our view. But if you intend to do some guided walks and ride on Wami river then an extra day will be quite useful.
