Mikindani lies 10km north of Mtwara. It possesses the characteristics of an old Swahili town with a layout of narrow roads lined with small double story houses with carved Zanzibar doors. Kilwa was once a very important port on the coast south of Kilwa and it is from where Dr Livingstone set off on his last expedition into the interior. Today, though over shadowed by Mtwara, Mikindani is a thriving fishing village and attracts tourists to its recently developed ecotourism sites.

Mikindani is accessible by road from both Lindi and Mtwara. By air it is connected to Dar es Salaam through the 15km away Mtwara airport.
