Moshi is a small town near Arusha in the north of Tanzania lying at the base of the world famous Kilimanjaro Mountain. If it hadn’t been for this mountain then Moshi would most probably be like any other unknown small towns in Tanzania. The thousands of tourists every year passing by this small town for climbing mount Kilimanjaro have made Moshi one of the most famous towns in the country. In the 1860s, before the arrival of the Germans, the Rindi chief ruled this town. Now mostly the Chagga tribe inhabits the town.
Moshi is quite well connected to the rest of the world because of Kilimanjaro International airport (KIA). Some airlines flying into Tanzania have KIA as their first stop in Tanzania. And Moshi is also an important public transport hub, connected by tarmac road and regular bus services to Arusha, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam and Tanga. Kilimanjaro international airport also provides a proper air link to most of the important towns in Tanzania.
Places to Visit
Most of the people come to Moshi because of climbing mount Kilimanjaro. Besides the mountain there are other few places for sightseeing that might be of interest to you such as cultural tours at Macheme and Marangu, visit the Materuni and Kuringe waterfall, visit Lake Chala in the east of Moshi or take a walk on the foothills and enjoy the breathtaking sights of the beautiful mount Kilimanjaro. Another interesting place, in the Marangu area, is the Kinukamori – ‘little moon’- waterfall. This place is also famous for the suicidal legend of a Chagga girl known as Makinuka.

Our Recommendations on Moshi
We would only suggest a tour of Moshi if you are climbing mount Kilimanjaro or if you have landed into Kilimanjaro international airport and have got a day to spare. In any case one or two nights are more than enough. The areas of visit in the outskirts of proper town would be more rewarding compared to the areas within the proper town.
