Songea town is situated in southern Tanzania, on the eastern side of Lake Nyasa. It is the administrative center of the Ruvuma region. It is an important center for the local gemstone industry, which has played a big role in the development of this town. Historically it is also famous for Ngoni Chiefs who took part in the famous Maji Maji rebellion against the Germans. Though less visited by tourists, Songea does provide a touch of the modern world compared to other areas in the nearby.

Songea is well connected by good tarmac roads along the Tanzam highway upto Dar es Salaam.
