Sumbawanga is the administrative capital of the Rukwa region. It lies south of Mpanda between Lake Tanganyika and Lake Rukwa. This small mid altitude town, though less visited by tourists, is the largest settlement along the road between Mpanda and Tunduma. And you are most likely to pass by when or overnight here when travelling between Zambia and western Tanzania.

Sumbawanga is only accessible by vehicles or air charter. The other option is to travel with the local ferry upto Karema and then drive to Sumbawanga.
