Located in the heart of Tanzania’s central plateau, Tabora is the center point of most of the roads and trains in Tanzania. Most travelers venturing between the coast and Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria will most probably be passing through this friendly and relaxed town. Tabora has been one of the oldest settlements in the Tanzanian interior and has been an important center of trade since the early 19th century. Today Tabora is characterized by spacious and shady avenues lined with mango and flame trees and ancient Asian and German buildings.

Tabora is an important transport hub in the center of the country. There are regular air, rail and road connections to Dar es salaam, Kigoma, Mwanza and other parts of the country.

Places to Visit

Besides local sightseeing, there are 2 main areas of reasonable interest to tourists. One is the Livingstone’s Tembe- the house where Dr. Livingstone stayed in while in Tabora in 1872. This has been turned into a museum. And the second is the Rungwa game reserve.

Our Recommendations on Tabora

You will most probably find yourself in Tabora if you are crossing over between the coast and the western parks of Tanzania. Since there are no sights of tourist’s interest, we would suggest you spend a part of the day doing sightseeing in the town and then head on to your next destination. If you are driving then Tabora perhaps will offer you better lodges for accommodation conmpared to other areas in the close vicinity. So if you have to break up at some point then Tabora would perhaps be a better choice.
