Tukuyu was once a German administrative center in the late 19th century. It is a small town set at an altitude of 1,650m at the base of Mount Rungwe in the southern highlands. It offers a good base for exploring the surrounding mountains with spectacular views of Lake Nyasa, which is situated more than 1,000m below.

Tukuyu lies 70km south of Mbeya and is connected by a good surfaced road.
