Situated 70kms north of Dar es Salaam is the ancient historical coastal town of Bagamoyo with its beautiful white beaches. Historically it is one of the most important towns in EastAfrica. Bagamoyo has been an important maritime trade center since the 12th century. The Portuguese, the Arabs and the Germans- all had presence in the history of Bagamoyo. The Bagamoyo bay played a significant role during the slave trade. Slaves from as far as the Lake Tanganyika area were brought to Bagamoyo before being transported to Zanzibar.
Today Bagamoyo has transformed into a potential tourist point. Decent beach hotels, historical sites, marine life and close proximity to Dar es Salaam are few of the factors enhancing tourist visitations to this town. With the recently constructed tarmac road Bagamoyo is only an hours drive from Dar es Salaam.
Places to Visit
Most of the tourist sites in Bagamoyo are historical. There are old historical buildings such as the Holy Ghost Mission, the Catholic Museum, the Germans Customs House, German Store House, the German Boma, the old Fort etc.
5kms south of Bagamoyo are the famous Kaole Ruins. These ruins date back to the 7th century. The ruins consist of an ancient mosque and several graves. This would probably have been the oldest mosque in East Africa.
