The island of Kilwa together with its nearby mainland towns are famous for history and architecture. In medieval times it provided an important settlement for 300 years to the thriving gold trade in the distant highlands of today’s Zimbabwe. Well preserved buildings represent the colonial past showing signs of the Shirazi, Portuguese, Omani and German eras. Today Kilwa boasts of one of the most authentic traditional Swahili fishing village culture on the coast.
There are regular flights between Kilwa and Dar es Salaam. Access by road is also possible.
